9th January 2004 Eric writes: Hello Jim, We ran the engine today and in went great. It was smooth, started easy, and when we ran a little power it sounded just like a radial should. I will be updating our web site www.hevleaviation.com and please use the pictures and descriptions on your web site. We will be getting the FAA sign off next week and will fly right after that. We will be also going to as many airshows as we can this year including Oshkosh. ... Thanks,
Eric Hevle

Feb 6th, 2004 Eric Writes: Hello Jim, Paul & Matt, ... news is that we have been flying it all around here and the word is spreading how good the engine sounds...
We have been doing a lot of flight testing and the engine is running great. I still think the prop does not have enough bite but it climbs like crazy, even out climbing a Super Cub with a 115 hp Lycoming at the same weight.
Temps and pressures are all normal and the engine is running smooth. ...The flight characteristics are better than we expected. Our cruise speed is 105 mph and the climb rate is better that the 115 hp Super Cub (same weight) that we have. Engine runs very smooth, starts easy either cold or hot and is really turning heads at the small airports around us. Thanks again for all your support (the best I have ever had with any engine builder or manufacturer)
Keepem flyn - Regards, Eric...

The brothers would be pleased to hear from you if you are either contemplating a project
or are thinking about upgrading your power-plant to a R2800! |

We have logged more than 70 hours on the Classic now. The flight characteristics have been better than expected. The engine pulls the 1200 lb. flying weight alone very well. Stalls are docile with no bad tendencies. The ailerons are light and responsive, where as the Elevator is heavier and sensitive. We have changed the elevator horn to make this better. The Front cockpit is comfortable with plenty of leg room, wind is light and visibility is good. The Back cockpit is a little different. First, viability is similar to a J-3 cub (flying from the back). Second, there is quite a bit more wind (similar to a Stearman). Third, at 6'2" I (Eric) am a little cramped, it's OK for shorter flights (45 min), but gets uncomfortable after an hour. We have lengthened the Fuselage 3" in the rear cockpit area to help this out. Also the Fuselage has been widened out by 3". Kitplanes article by Ron Wanttaja due August 2004 issue. We
will be taking it to as many airshows as we can stand this season.
